The effects of rising oceans on coastal flooding may be even worse than we thought. Scientists have found that a mere 10 to 20 centimeters of sea-level rise — which is expected by 2050 — will more than double the frequency of serious flooding events in many parts of the globe... The southern portion of Southern California may experience the brunt of sea-level rise in the region...ncludes beaches from around Point Loma all the way up to Laguna Beach, including La Jolla, Del Mar and Oceanside.

Last month the U.S. Geological Survey estimated that without concerted intervention, as much as 67 percent of Southern California’s beaches could be lost to rising seas by the end of the century ... More than 42,000 homes in California will be under water—not merely flooded, but with seawater over roofs.

San Diego seems to reflect a nationwide trend. A report published last month by the Economic Policy Institute, a think tank focusing on low- and middle-income workers, found that 6.4 million Americans want full-time work but are stuck working part-time jobs. The report found that the number of people working part time involuntarily was 45 percent higher than it was before the Great Recession.

Curing HIV presents a particularly difficult challenge because the virus can hide out in a dormant form, inside the genome of the immune cells it infects ... Vaccines against some viruses, such as smallpox or polio, can be prepared from relatively simple derivatives of the virus. However, HIV presents a much more difficult target for the immune system. It mutates extremely rapidly, and also presents decoy proteins that fool the immune system. HIV’s vulnerable regions are hard to find.

Property developers must adhere to zoning codes that typically include providing a minimum number of parking spaces for a certain amount of space used by tenants. But cities such as New York and San Francisco have been leaders in removing or reducing parking requirements in recent years as part of efforts to curb traffic congestion and encourage more people to use mass transit.
